Alanis Morissette is back and ready to reclaim the Rock Goddess of the World crown she’s kept in the closet long enough. She’s probably the best-selling female rock artist in the world, having sold over 55 million albums, but it’s been expectations of following up the uber-success of her debut that have been her curse. Let’s back up and introduce you to a cool Guy.
Guy Sigsworth, together with Imogen Heap, made up Frou Frou, a band that found widespread acclaim with “Let Go” featured in Zach Braff’s “Garden State” film. They also recorded a cover of Bonnie Tyler’s “Footloose” hit  ”Holding Out For A Hero” which is spectacular even though it’s on the “Shrek 2″ soundtrack. Prior to this, Sigsworth produced some Bjork records and had also worked on Seal’s biggest hit, “Crazy.” He’s also written or produced tracks for Jem, Madonna, Britney Spears (”Everytime”), Robyn, Sugababes and even Josh Groban, This brings us to Alanis Morissette, who partnered with Sigsworth to co-write and produce her delicious new album, Flavors of Entanglement.
This new project is a complete gem. Imagine combining Seal and Imogen Heap with the lyrical intensity and pure rock passion of Alanis as heard on Jagged Little Pill and you might very well have the Album of the Year. Flavors of Entanglement is techno/club rock for the relationally disenfranchised. I’m looking forward to hearing the other 12 b-sides that aren’t being released on the initial CD. I can’t get enough as it is. One track is slamming rock guitars trumping electronic bleeps, and the next is a melodic and emotive piano ballad (”Not As We”).
A lot of hype has been made about the raw emotion of this project being due to her recent break-up with actor Ryan Reynolds. If that is indeed the case, we’re sorry for the personal tragedy of your relationship dissolution, but we’re incredible grateful for the fruits of your dislabour.
Best song title: “In Praise of the Vulnerable Man”
