Welcome back to another issue of “What I Think Rocks!” I’m happy to say I’m continually blown away by great music, and I love the idea of being able to share a little with you. Even if one person’s CD collection is helped, my writing and listening will have been worth it.
Guilty Pleasure: I am not ashamed to say the new Jonas Brothers CD kicks complete pop-arse. It’s so much fun, adults are being rumored to be burning their own copies of their kids’ CD so they can listen on the drive to work. You can’t help but smile listening to this slick party-pop. And actually, same goes for Miley’s new CD, Breakout – download her version of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” if you’re skeptical.
Have you fallen in love with Sara Bareilles and yet feel like it’s time to maybe consider moving on to someone new? I found just the girl for you – Hilary McRae. Mmmmm tasty pop. It’s like Sara went to Jazz Camp, met a bunch of horn players and smoked a bunch of cigarettes. Well worth the download.
Jars of Clay have just put out a new EP - Closer - and I have to say, it’s pretty good. I especially love the programming on the title track, it has a really special feel that is uniquely Jars, but kinda like in the future. Don’t miss their awesome remakes of “Love Song for a Savior” and “Flood.” I hope this means the Jar boys will be returning to a more experimental sound with their intelligent brand of pop/rock. I look forward to what’s ahead from these creative label-free musicians.
MISC NOTES: Lil’ Archie just released his first post-Idol single, “Crush” - and it’s non-offensive as well, that it might do him well. It’s not bad, but it just as well could be Jordin Sparks singing it and no one would know the difference. One of my favorite band’s, Keane, just offered a new single “Spiralling” for free on their website over the past week. It sounds very 80s. I feel like I should like it, but I can’t decide who they’re trying to be, and I just wish they’d just be them. Maybe they feel the same way about me. Heck, I’ll still buy their CD, Perfect Symmetry, when it comes out this fall. Pink has a hot new song “So What” — she’s sassy and husband-less, cherishing her rockstar-ness. You’re actually going to like Whitney Houston’s new song. She’s got help from Akon (but who doesn’t) on “Like I Never Left” - it’s kinda like a song about reuniting with her old boyfriend/fanbase. It’s a mid-tempo, frothy pop gem — instantly accessible and a no-brainer add for radio station programmers. This completes the Mariah/Madonna/Janet/Whitney Pop Quadfecta of 2008. At ease, pop soldiers.
