Fall Music Spectacular!

Hello Fellow Music Aficionados! It’s a great fall for music. First a recap. Rockin summer tunes that I always turned up when they came on: Rihanna - “Disturbia”, Chris Brown - “Forever”, Ne-Yo - “Closer”, and Metro Station - “Shake It”. Am I right? Thanks Pop-gods for the unadulterated, syrupy joy these songs dripped, er…delivered.

Have you heard Brooke Fraser yet? Her song (and video!) “Shadowfeet” is stunning. She’s a New Zealander who emerged from the Hillsong movement, and is now doing awesome singer/songwriter gloriosity. You’ll thank me for this one. I’m still digging Francesca Battistelli’s Paper Heart CD (way to go Ian Eskelin!) and Krystal Meyers keeps turning my head with her dance-pop infectiousness, Make Some Noise.

New tunes I’m excited about: Snow Patrol - “Take Back The City”, Killers - “Human”, Fall Out Boy - “I Don’t Care” & “Cooperstown”, Christina Aguilera - “Keeps Getting Better”, Kevin Rudolf & Lil’ Wayne - “Let It Rock.”

New albums that have me talking to others about them: Keane - Perfect Symmetry, Brandon Heath - What If We, Jon McLaughlin - OK Now, Lady Gaga - The Fame, James Morrisson - Song For You, Truths For Me, Marc Broussard - Keep Coming Back

Videos I’m loving: Staind - “Believe”, Lenka - “The Show”, and Lifehouse - “Broken” (my personal Song of the Year)

I hope these nuggets get placed in your head so the next time you hear about one of these artists, you’ll remember, “Oh yeah, It’s Just Pop liked that one,” and maybe you’ll take an extra good listen. That’s my prayer for you, my precious pop prodigies.

The Jonas Brothers Stole My Heart (Sure to be googled!)

Welcome back to another issue of “What I Think Rocks!” I’m happy to say I’m continually blown away by great music, and I love the idea of being able to share a little with you. Even if one person’s CD collection is helped, my writing and listening will have been worth it.

Guilty Pleasure: I am not ashamed to say the new Jonas Brothers CD kicks complete pop-arse. It’s so much fun, adults are being rumored to be burning their own copies of their kids’ CD so they can listen on the drive to work. You can’t help but smile listening to this slick party-pop. And actually, same goes for Miley’s new CD, Breakout – download her version of “Girls Just Want To Have Fun” if you’re skeptical.

Have you fallen in love with Sara Bareilles and yet feel like it’s time to maybe consider moving on to someone new? I found just the girl for you – Hilary McRae. Mmmmm tasty pop.

Sirius and XM Complete Merger: Home Stretch or Last Hurrah?

We’ve been hearing about the impending Sirius/XM merger for about a year now, and today it finally became official. It’ll be interesting to see what this means for what has been largely a niche market. Satellite radio is cool, for sure, mostly due to the availability of commercial free and narrowly-targeted content, and some cool hardware options, but as an industry they’ve had to rely mostly on new car purchases (with satellite equipment included and free trial periods offered) and big-name talent acquisitions (like Howard Stearn or Martha Stewart) to get new subscribers, rather than the preferred method of word-of-mouth buzz or straight up product dominance.

Will this merger allow the new company to make the push for mainstream acceptance by shedding overhead and removing the major competition for the big-name deals, or will it be a sign that satellite radio as an industry has “jumped the shark” and is doomed to be a novelty item of the future?

Katy Perry Kisses Her Way To Summer Domination

Surely by now you’ve heard the number one song of the summer, the flirty ChapStick ad, “I Kissed A Girl” from Katy Perry. While the beat is completely ripped from “Rock N Roll Part 2″ by Gary Glitter (”Na na na na na, HEY!”), the hook is drill-licious. Christian music aficionados might (but probably not) remember Katy as Katy Hudson, who released an album for the Christian market when signed to Jennifer Knapp (and Steve Thomas’ label) Red Hill Records/Pamplin sometime in 2001. It didn’t do so hot. It’s unclear exactly what her religious beliefs are these days (or in those days), but in Blender mag in 2004 she did consider herself as not a “typical Christian.” So, that makes two of us, I guess. Anyone else?

Pussycat Dolls are back - Thank GOD! And their streamlining down to only five members allows Nicole to be right in the smack center during the choreography.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

I’m not sure if the name could get any more unique, but I’m quite certain the premise can’t.

Joss Whedon, my own personal hero, has created a short series of “webisodes” that follows the day to day struggles of one Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) as he tries to join the Evil League of Evil, gain the courage to talk to his crush (Felicia Day) at the Laundry Mat, and defeat his arch nemesis Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion aka Capt. Mal Reynolds of “Serenity”).

The true genius of these 15 minute mini episodes?  They’re also musicals.

Alanis Dishes Jagged Rock Gold With Flavors of Entanglement

Alanis Morissette is back and ready to reclaim the Rock Goddess of the World crown she’s kept in the closet long enough. She’s probably the best-selling female rock artist in the world, having sold over 55 million albums, but it’s been expectations of following up the uber-success of her debut that have been her curse. Let’s back up and introduce you to a cool Guy.

Guy Sigsworth, together with Imogen Heap, made up Frou Frou, a band that found widespread acclaim with “Let Go” featured in Zach Braff’s “Garden State” film. They also recorded a cover of Bonnie Tyler’s “Footloose” hit  ”Holding Out For A Hero” which is spectacular even though it’s on the “Shrek 2″ soundtrack. Prior to this, Sigsworth produced some Bjork records and had also worked on Seal’s biggest hit, “Crazy.” He’s also written or produced tracks for Jem, Madonna, Britney Spears (”Everytime”), Robyn, Sugababes and even Josh Groban, This brings us to Alanis Morissette, who partnered with Sigsworth to co-write and produce her delicious new album, Flavors of Entanglement.

Jason Mraz Scores Summer Smash

Welcome back Music Lovers! Steering you through the turbulant waters of popdom, it’s my pleasure to tell you about some awesome sounds that are inspiring me lately.

First off, I have finally found my soundtrack for the summer. It’s the deliciously delightful Jason Mraz’s new project, We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things. This is the kind of record you play while you and a gang of good-looking friends hang out by the beach, drinking diet cokes, or whatever the good-looking people are drinking these days. He alternates sassy, slappy horn-driven jams (ala EW&F), with laid-back, nowhere-to-go, acoustic melodic pop gems. And more. Jason keeps surprising with new twists and production turns, without seeming schizo. This is for you if you like what the uber-laidback Jack Jackson has done, but wonder what he might be like if he actually got a good night’s sleep. Primo pop.

America finally gets it right with an American Idol Finale that was pleasantly shocking

In what was a truly shocking (at least to this AI superfan) season finale of American Idol, David “Cookie” Cook took the season seven crown of American Idol by an approximate 12 million vote spread.

My American Idol mojo has been fairly off this season with only 1 out of the last 4 eliminations coming in where I expected them to. Carly Smithson out before Syesha? Brooke White out before Syesha? Castro out before Syesha? You get the drift. However, my season finale mojo has only failed me once with season two’s crowning of Ruben Studdard, a victory I still think was incorrect and later “covered up” by the AI peeps. Yes, I’m an American Idol conspiracy theorist. Don’t judge! The snacks at our meetings are totally worth being a member. I assumed I was safe with my prediction of this season’s winner even if I was disappointed with what I thought would be the outcome.

American Idol 05/20: David Cook, David Archuleta…no David Hasselhoff?

Live from the 7,000 seat Nokia theatre in downtown L.A. was the highly entertaining, but probably pointless last week of American Idol season seven performances, none of which were disappointing.

For the finale, each of the Dueling Davids were given three chances to solidify Archie’s win win over any undecided votes and reinforce why they are still standing after these many weeks. The voting will come down to the tweens (Archuleta) vs. the cougars (Cookie) - a term which is pop culturally relevant, but that I, personally, find repugnant.

An Open Letter to the American Idol Producers:

Dear AI Producers,

Thank you for giving the American Idol viewing audience the greatest cutaway shot of Simon Cowell in the history of the show.

Bringing back Fantasia and her craziness to the power of pi was pretty smart. Having her perform a song that is as wacked out of a song as I’ve ever heard, even smarter. Subjecting Simon to it and then giving us a cutaway shot of his expression at seeing Fantasia and her goodGRAVYjusthowshortarethoseskirts back up, um, dingers (singer/dancer) work it out as only they could on stage? True genius! I don’t even care that I couldn’t understand a word of the song and was horrified/oddly fascinated by the entire circus of a performance. The look was worth it all.

Archuleta Kicked Off American Idol - But Not David

An Archuleta was kicked off American Idol this week, but it’s not the Golden Child David, but his father Jeff. Papa Archuleta has been long rumored to be a nuisance backstage, but until now Idol producers have not been prompted to take action. According to the AP, a lyric change leading up to this week’s performance was the straw that broke the overbearing camel’s back, as Jeff Archuleta added a lyric from Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girl” to David’s performance of “Stand By Me” and was subsequently banned from rehearsals. ”Beautiful Girl” uses a sample from “Stand By Me” and the problem is that Fox now has to pay royalties for the Kingston tune. Archuleta senior was reportedly warned about the backstage meddling.

Now if only they could ban those silly hats he wears.

This Week In Jesus - Grand Theft Culture Edition

Well, after a one-week hiatus, TWIJ is back and better than ever. The last two weeks, Jesus has been conspicuously absent from both American Idol AND Oprah, but we won’t hold it against them. Another big story that Jesus was absent from was the MASSIVE release of Grand Theft Auto IV. For those of you who have been living under a rock that was under another really big rock that was surrounded by a really high pop-culture-reflecting fence, GTA has been a staple of the gaming culture since 1997 when Rockstar Games released the first edition of the current four (not including expansion packs.) The latest release sold 6 million copies worldwide in its first week, grossing over $500 million (which was even more impressive than Iron Man’s $100 million take!), and the series as a whole has sold over 70 million copies.

Shine On, Music Lovers!

Hello Again Music Lovers! Yes, I as well, am feeling a bit overwhelmed these days with all the great music flying around the Interweb. I hope these little blentries will help you charter the stormy seas of our Idol-infested musical waters.

Remember when Lindsey Lohan was the Miley Cyrus of the late 90s? That was awesome. Hollywood’s 2nd Favorite Trainwreck (Awww, how sweet!) has a fierce new track, “Bossy,” from an upcoming album. And I’m loving it. Very catchy and fun, with brill-pop lyrics like, “I’m just a little bossy, I like it how I like it, I get it when I want it” and “Trust me, you want me happy.” Shine on, H2FT, you pop-mess doll-girl.

Donna Summer has always been one of my favorites—her voice gives me chill-bumps on my goosebumps. On 5/20 she’s releasing a new CD called Crayons, a dance/pop collection that is being marketed as her come back.

American Idol Results 05/08: Castro Gets Impeached

Read our review of last night’s performances here.

On the night where Castro’s funny, endearing quirkitude might have shined brightest, the dreadlocked one got the boot. From his amused expression during the group number to his quizzical questioning of Ryan - he wondered, “Are you going to tell us now? It’s too early!” when Ryan gave us an ellimination tease before one of the commercial breaks about halfway through the show - he’s never been so funny.

Major kudos to the producer that was in charge of his goodbye video package. They managed to capture Castro’s I’m-in-my-own-world-but-it’s-really-nice-here mannerisms without making him seem crazy, which was one way that could have gone.

While I was sad to see him go, and Idol will be a little less interesting, at the end of the day it was the right time for him to go.

American Idol 05/06: Top Four or the week David Archuleta solidified his victory

For the first time in Idol history I’m actually totally behind every song choice of the top four as they select from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songbook.  Absent tonight were awkward song choices, Jason Castro’s mojo, and Paula’s ability to form anything resembling a coherent or relevant criticism.

David Cook heads up the show with “Hungry Like a Wolf,” a song best covered by Reel Big Fish.  Cookie does a decent David Cook version with plenty of growling and mic stand choreography.  Vocally, he’s totally solid, if a little bland with the song.  He does manage to complete my transformation into unrepentant fangirl.  I’m putting IGYPRH’s bro-mance with Cookie on notice.  DC has turned me into a squeeling 14 year old girl and I kinda don’t care.  Cookie also gets kudos with his second song choice of “Baba O’Riley.”  I was actually able to listen to this entire song and not once have a visual of Gary Sinise or anyone else from the cast of CSI: New York.  He puts his trademark spin on it and it doth rock mightily so saith I and the majority of the audience.  He should be smoothly into the top 3.

American Idol 04/29: Neil Diamond Week - complete with Saving Silverman visuals.

We’re down to five contestants and the best they could come up with was Neil Diamond? I can’t even type his name without yawning or inadvertently ducking rhinestones.

This recap will be like David Archuleta — Short and Sweet.

The contestants get two chances to pick a horrendously bland song for our listening pleasure. Judges’ comments will be held until after the second song is performed…except they won’t and we’ll get one of the best Paula Abdul blunders since the ear monitor bud incident with Michael Johns. When offering comments after the contestant’s first round song, Paula proceeded to tell Jason Castro how he did on both songs…before he actually sang his second song. Classic!

Madonna Creates Tasty Ear Candy

Hello Music Lovers! It’s been another fine week between my ears and I’m thrilled as ever to report in on the things that made my ear hairs especially stand up on end. (Sorry, that’s gross—yet hilarious to me.) Next CD to add to your collection is Madonna’s new Hard Candy. Dude, this CD is sweet! It feels like she took all the really fun, popalicious elements from Confessions and Music and then mashed em all together with the slickness and white-girl-dancing-in-the-hood-urbanosity of her debut (i.e. “Holiday” or “Lucky Star”) to create this tasty collection. I’d love to give some props to Timbaland or Timberlake for their contributions, but ultimately, Madge herself gets the credit for all the joy I’m feeling. See kids, being 50 can be fun!!

Other big news from one of my favorite groups, Coldplay is offering a free download of a new song, “Violet Hill” from their upcoming project Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends.

Roger Clemens reportedly had affair with 15-year-old singer Mindy McCready

Ok, so I’ve kept pretty quiet about the whole steroid issue in baseball because my opinion is pretty nuanced, and I didn’t want to give the impression that I approved of steroid use.  But, this story provoked me to write, not because I have anything new or spectacular to say but because it appears that I could actually be seen somewhere on the periphery of this story, like if it were in a movie, I’d be in one of those high school scenes with kids seated at tables in a large cafeteria.  Yes, Mindy McCready and I were at the same high school.

And no, I am not going to pretend I know Mindy McCready or even had any real opportunity to see how she acted or interacted with her friends.  We never said one word to each other, and I doubt she knows who I am or knew who I was then.  I can say, though, that I could tell she wanted to be a star then, though she seems to have let it take her down a rather rocky path.  She’s been in trouble for drug and alcohol-related incidents.  She’s had trouble with boyfriends and her family, and only now is she trying to make a serious comeback with a documentary, an album, and a reality show all in the works for her.

Miley Cyrus Causes a Stir With Racy(?) Vanity Fair Shoot

I guess she’s just being Miley (again). Following the recent appearance of pictures of Miley Cyrus in questionable stages of (sort-of) undress, you’d think that she and her handlers would be walking the straight and narrow for a while. But you’d be wrong.

As it turns out, next month’s issue of Vanity Fair has the 15-year-old poptress showing her bare back in what the magazine’s talking heads are calling in an Associated Press article, “…a beautiful and natural portrait of Miley.” A regretful Miley, in a recent statement, said, “I took part in a photo shoot that was supposed to be ‘artistic’ and now, seeing the photographs and reading the story, I feel so embarrassed,” Cyrus said Sunday in a statement through her publicist. “I never intended for any of this to happen and I apologize to my fans who I care so deeply about.”

While it would be easy to criticise the young do-it-all for oversexing her image, let’s be honest - the photographer was Annie-friggin-Liebovitz.

Two Music Videos To Blow Your Mind

I present to you for your auralvisualtainment (NAW) two examples of the music video as art form. The first is from Beck, with “Hell Yes.” It would be appropriate to mention that Beck himself has a pretty solid breakdancing background (which shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody who’s seen his live show), and also to bring your attention to the phenomenon of “the uncanny valley.” The robots here are Sony’s QRIO, which were designed originally for a potential commercial release.

The second triptastic video is for a killer tune “Time To Pretend” by MGMT. Their exceptionally well-titled album Oracular Spectacular doesn’t have quite the same groovy poprock vibe of “Time” (it’s a little more groove and a lot less poprock) but could be a good addition to your listen-while-you-work collection.

First Beck…

The MGMT isn’t available for embedding, but you can (and should) watch it here.
