Saving Grace: Eli Stone on Crack

IGYPRH wrote that if Eli Stone wasn’t the best examination of faith on TV, he’d sell his TiVo.  Well, he can keep his TiVo, but Eli Stone does have some fairly strong competition in Saving Grace, the cable, female version of Eli Stone.  TNT’s drama (Mondays, 10/9pmC) is now in its second season, and it’s still as strong as was when it made its first splash last summer.

Grace has its flaws.  It’s yet another police procedural, one part Law & Order and one part CSI.  It tries way too hard sometimes to be hip, and Holly Hunter isn’t kidding anyone.  She’s 50, and she looks it, no matter how skinny she is and how many times she has to punch guys out for coming on too strong.  Most jarring is the bar scenes when there’s way too much laughter and not enough real dialogue to reveal what the people behind the caricatures.

But despite all this, the acting is generally very good.  The supporting characters aren’t as interesting as Eli Stone’s supporting cast, but the actors do their jobs well despite a lack of material.  Holly Hunter is an Academy Award-winning actress, and she shows why here.  Finally, of course, the premise is compelling.  Grace is much more unwilling to respond to her George Michael, in this case an angel named Earl, but that’s what keeps this imperfect but interesting show worth watching.

Mad Men

Mad Men (Season 2 Premiere, Tonight, Sun. 7/27, 10pm), is the story of “ad men” of the early 1960s (before flower power).  It’s the story of the beginning of our age when advertising is everywhere.  It’s the beginning of focus groups and market testing.

Mad Men is not for everyone.

Burn Notice

In the early days of TV drama, two-dimensional characters were the norm, and viewers didn’t mind.  It was all about the stand-alone story of the week.  These days, though, we ask for a background story, recognizable quirks, idiosyncrasies or traits, and believable and interesting relationships for each character.

This is where Burn Notice (Thursday 10/9C) fails.  The producers and writers make an attempt, but there’s just not enough here.  We’ve seen these characters before, and they were more interesting.  Burn Notice is about a former CIA spy who has been cut off (burned) by the agency.  Now, he must find out who burned him and clear himself of the wrongdoing or disloyalty that caused the burn.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog

I’m not sure if the name could get any more unique, but I’m quite certain the premise can’t.

Joss Whedon, my own personal hero, has created a short series of “webisodes” that follows the day to day struggles of one Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) as he tries to join the Evil League of Evil, gain the courage to talk to his crush (Felicia Day) at the Laundry Mat, and defeat his arch nemesis Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion aka Capt. Mal Reynolds of “Serenity”).

The true genius of these 15 minute mini episodes?  They’re also musicals.

In Plain Sight

We’re about halfway through the summer, but the regular fall TV season probably won’t be starting for real for a couple of months (only CBS has announced its premiere schedule as far as I can tell).  So, how should your TiVo busy until then?  I’ll give you a few suggestions over the next week or so.

Weeds Season 4 Premiere Tonight

If you haven’t seen Weeds on Showtime yet, you’re in for an interesting experience.  I think it’s one of the most original and entertaining shows on TV right now.  Mary-Louise Parker is delightfully quirky in the lead role, and the supporting cast of characters is equally eccentric.

There is one thing, though.  To enjoy this show, as with Dexter on the same network, you have to be willing to sympathize with a morally ambiguous (at best) lead character.  Parker’s Nancy Botwin is a drug dealer.  There’s really no way to ignore it.  It’s what the series is about.

America finally gets it right with an American Idol Finale that was pleasantly shocking

In what was a truly shocking (at least to this AI superfan) season finale of American Idol, David “Cookie” Cook took the season seven crown of American Idol by an approximate 12 million vote spread.

My American Idol mojo has been fairly off this season with only 1 out of the last 4 eliminations coming in where I expected them to. Carly Smithson out before Syesha? Brooke White out before Syesha? Castro out before Syesha? You get the drift. However, my season finale mojo has only failed me once with season two’s crowning of Ruben Studdard, a victory I still think was incorrect and later “covered up” by the AI peeps. Yes, I’m an American Idol conspiracy theorist. Don’t judge! The snacks at our meetings are totally worth being a member. I assumed I was safe with my prediction of this season’s winner even if I was disappointed with what I thought would be the outcome.

American Idol 05/20: David Cook, David Archuleta…no David Hasselhoff?

Live from the 7,000 seat Nokia theatre in downtown L.A. was the highly entertaining, but probably pointless last week of American Idol season seven performances, none of which were disappointing.

For the finale, each of the Dueling Davids were given three chances to solidify Archie’s win win over any undecided votes and reinforce why they are still standing after these many weeks. The voting will come down to the tweens (Archuleta) vs. the cougars (Cookie) - a term which is pop culturally relevant, but that I, personally, find repugnant.

Terminator Returns, New Amsterdam Gets Killed Off

Fox released its Fall/Spring lineup today, and fanboys (and girls) everywhere let out a collective squee. Not only is Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles returning, but Fox is also adding a Family Guy spinoff, a new series by Joss Whedon (starring Eliza Dushku), a new series by J.J. Abrams (starring Joshua Jackson), an animated series written by and starring a chunk of the Arrested Development peeps, and a 24 movie prequel. Seriously, the only thing Fox could’ve done to up their FPQ (Fanperson Pandering Quotient) would’ve been to roll out a series called Lord of the Jericho Fireflies, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Optimus Prime, and a holographic image of Christopher Reeve.

Also, one of my new favorite shows New Amsterdam got the proverbial axe, which is a little sad. I think it had a lot of potential.

An Open Letter to the American Idol Producers:

Dear AI Producers,

Thank you for giving the American Idol viewing audience the greatest cutaway shot of Simon Cowell in the history of the show.

Bringing back Fantasia and her craziness to the power of pi was pretty smart. Having her perform a song that is as wacked out of a song as I’ve ever heard, even smarter. Subjecting Simon to it and then giving us a cutaway shot of his expression at seeing Fantasia and her goodGRAVYjusthowshortarethoseskirts back up, um, dingers (singer/dancer) work it out as only they could on stage? True genius! I don’t even care that I couldn’t understand a word of the song and was horrified/oddly fascinated by the entire circus of a performance. The look was worth it all.

Jimmy Fallon On Deck To Replace Conan O’Brien

At a news conference today, NBC confirmed all the rumors by announcing that Jimmy Fallon will be taking over Conan O’Brien’s desk when he leaves to take up Jay Leno’s spot at the Tonight Show. NBC’s game of late night musical desks is something of a gamble, as they have been winning the war for late night eyeballs despite an overall decline in general viewership.

It’s also something of a gamble to put so many eggs in Jimmy Fallon’s basket. Obviously somebody at the Peacock liked Fallon enough when he did Weekend Update on SNL. While he was certainly solid in that position, there’s a lot more to hosting your own show than delivering scripted banter (especially when you don’t have the delightful Tina Fey to play straight-man).

My bet is that he won’t be as funny as Kimmel, as charming as (my favorite) Craig Ferguson, or as wacky as Conan. The only thing that’s certain is that he will giggle a lot.

Archuleta Kicked Off American Idol - But Not David

An Archuleta was kicked off American Idol this week, but it’s not the Golden Child David, but his father Jeff. Papa Archuleta has been long rumored to be a nuisance backstage, but until now Idol producers have not been prompted to take action. According to the AP, a lyric change leading up to this week’s performance was the straw that broke the overbearing camel’s back, as Jeff Archuleta added a lyric from Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girl” to David’s performance of “Stand By Me” and was subsequently banned from rehearsals. ”Beautiful Girl” uses a sample from “Stand By Me” and the problem is that Fox now has to pay royalties for the Kingston tune. Archuleta senior was reportedly warned about the backstage meddling.

Now if only they could ban those silly hats he wears.

Heroes: Season Three - Villains

NBC loves to tease those of us who have been waiting with baited breath for the return of our beloved “Heroes.” Last season was way too short and suffered a bit overall because of it, but something about the concept of next season’s Villains arc has me about as giddy as a wee little girl.

Heroes: Season Three - Villains

I’ve always been fascinated by the duality of man, especially how that is portrayed in comic books with hero vs. villain. In every hero there is a potential to be a villain and vise versa. Had Clark Kent been raised by Lionel Luthor, we would have had a very different Superman. The last and hopefully final “Spiderman” movie gave us glimpses of what happens when great power yields great irresponsibility. The potential to become apathetic or down right evil is huge.

John McCain and ‘The West Wing’

Associated PressI may be a day or two late on this story, but it is still developing.  We haven’t written much on John McCain because, frankly, there hasn’t been anything exciting or even interesting to write about since he wrapped up the Republican Presidential nomination.

It’s a little bit eerie, a little bit puzzling, and, I think, very amusing, though.  Apparently, Bradley Whitford and Richard Schiff (aka Josh Lyman and Toby Ziegler on The West Wing) have forgotten that they weren’t actually Presidential aides and have decided that their positions give them the political credibility to convince the American people that John McCain actually admitted to not voting for George W. Bush for President in the 2000 election.

Now, I don’t know.  Maybe they’re right.  You’ll have to decide for yourself after reading the original claim made by conservative-turned-liberal blogger Arianna Huffington and the news stories about Whitford’s and Schiff’s accounts, but it seems to me to be wishful thinking that led to a misunderstanding.  I can believe that John McCain may have still harbored some disappointment over not winning the nomination of his party that year and still may have thought he was the better choice, but if he had voted for someone else in the general election, I personally can’t believe he would have admitted it.

This Week In Jesus - Grand Theft Culture Edition

Well, after a one-week hiatus, TWIJ is back and better than ever. The last two weeks, Jesus has been conspicuously absent from both American Idol AND Oprah, but we won’t hold it against them. Another big story that Jesus was absent from was the MASSIVE release of Grand Theft Auto IV. For those of you who have been living under a rock that was under another really big rock that was surrounded by a really high pop-culture-reflecting fence, GTA has been a staple of the gaming culture since 1997 when Rockstar Games released the first edition of the current four (not including expansion packs.) The latest release sold 6 million copies worldwide in its first week, grossing over $500 million (which was even more impressive than Iron Man’s $100 million take!), and the series as a whole has sold over 70 million copies.

American Idol Results 05/08: Castro Gets Impeached

Read our review of last night’s performances here.

On the night where Castro’s funny, endearing quirkitude might have shined brightest, the dreadlocked one got the boot. From his amused expression during the group number to his quizzical questioning of Ryan - he wondered, “Are you going to tell us now? It’s too early!” when Ryan gave us an ellimination tease before one of the commercial breaks about halfway through the show - he’s never been so funny.

Major kudos to the producer that was in charge of his goodbye video package. They managed to capture Castro’s I’m-in-my-own-world-but-it’s-really-nice-here mannerisms without making him seem crazy, which was one way that could have gone.

While I was sad to see him go, and Idol will be a little less interesting, at the end of the day it was the right time for him to go.

American Idol 05/06: Top Four or the week David Archuleta solidified his victory

For the first time in Idol history I’m actually totally behind every song choice of the top four as they select from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame songbook.  Absent tonight were awkward song choices, Jason Castro’s mojo, and Paula’s ability to form anything resembling a coherent or relevant criticism.

David Cook heads up the show with “Hungry Like a Wolf,” a song best covered by Reel Big Fish.  Cookie does a decent David Cook version with plenty of growling and mic stand choreography.  Vocally, he’s totally solid, if a little bland with the song.  He does manage to complete my transformation into unrepentant fangirl.  I’m putting IGYPRH’s bro-mance with Cookie on notice.  DC has turned me into a squeeling 14 year old girl and I kinda don’t care.  Cookie also gets kudos with his second song choice of “Baba O’Riley.”  I was actually able to listen to this entire song and not once have a visual of Gary Sinise or anyone else from the cast of CSI: New York.  He puts his trademark spin on it and it doth rock mightily so saith I and the majority of the audience.  He should be smoothly into the top 3.

Abortion Rare in Movies and TV

***Minor Spoiler Alert for the TiVo set***

Last night, while watching Grey’s Anatomy, I actually thought I would see something I haven’t personally seen on TV or in a movie for at least 10 years:  an abortion.

American Idol 04/29: Neil Diamond Week - complete with Saving Silverman visuals.

We’re down to five contestants and the best they could come up with was Neil Diamond? I can’t even type his name without yawning or inadvertently ducking rhinestones.

This recap will be like David Archuleta — Short and Sweet.

The contestants get two chances to pick a horrendously bland song for our listening pleasure. Judges’ comments will be held until after the second song is performed…except they won’t and we’ll get one of the best Paula Abdul blunders since the ear monitor bud incident with Michael Johns. When offering comments after the contestant’s first round song, Paula proceeded to tell Jason Castro how he did on both songs…before he actually sang his second song. Classic!
