Reality TV Update: Step It Up soars, Secret Talents bores

The A.P. is reporting today that after airing just one episode, CBS is pulling the plug on “Secret Talents of the Stars” and while I didn’t catch the opener, I wasn’t the only one. Only 4.6 million did, and according to the AP story, “thousands tuned away as the hour continued.” I can’t say I’m surprised. For some reason, despite having genuine names like Clint Black, Mya, and George Takei, I wasn’t the least bit interested in tuning in. I suspect that it has something to do with the bajilion reality shows we’ve been forced to endure while the writers’ strike sucked the life out of TV. Obvious joke in 3…2…1: I guess their talents will just have to remain secret.

Miguel from Step Up and DanceOn the other (good) end of the doesn’t-suck spectrum was Bravo’s “Step It Up and Dance.” Say what you will about the gays, but you HAVE to agree that they generally make for good TV (see: Project Runway), and SIUAD has got a (nother) gregarious gaggle of them on their hands.

You’re either in…or you’re moved to a channel with awesomely bad made for TV movies only your mom watches

You can expect something different out of the sixth season of “Project Runway” premiering in November 2008 — a move to the most estrogen laced network on television where it’s always that time of the month. Lifetime.

Out will be guest judges like Victoria Beckham. In will be guest judges Meredith Baxter-Birney, Kellie Martin, and Joanna Kerns for the finale. I may have made that part up, but with Lifetime, it’s a possibility.

In a totally unexpected move, Lifetime Television has purchased “Project Runway” from The Weinstein Company and will begin airing the show in its sixth season.

Not on board with this is NBC (Bravo’s parent company) who has now filed suit with TWC for not being granted right of first refusal for future cycles of the show after their original contract runs out.

3/19 Top Chef Results: teeny weeny blini blunder

Like all reality show competitions, Top Chef always struggles in the first few weeks to get us to care about any of the contestants and this season is no exception, so when moderately-annoying Valerie got the axe, no one cared much. Here’s how it went down:

Wylie Dufresne was the guest judge, which felt promising for the few contestants (most notably this year’s resident mohawk - Richard) who practice the dark culinary art of molecular gastronomy. Dufresne is a Chicago local known for crazy stunts like printing his menus on edible paper with edible ink.

The quickfire challenge was at a farmer’s market, which was interesting…sort of. Contestants were allowed to purchase a total of five ingredients (not including oil, salt, pepper, and sugar). The second they announced the challenge, I thought, “There’s going to be at least ONE person that does not stick to the five.” Sure enough, Andrew forgets that balsamic counts as an ingredient. What a boob (and NOT in a good way).

Ok, so I know that about 3 million other people besides me watched at least part of the debut of “Quarterlife” on NBC Tuesday night at 10pm, but that’s not many and probably doesn’t include anyone reading this. Earlier reports coming this morning were that “Quarterlife” would be cancelled and that co-creator Marshall Herskovitz wasn’t surprised and wasn’t particularly bothered. Later reports are that NBC will move the show to Bravo.

I think this show will be better-suited for Bravo, or any cable channel for that matter, where it would have more freedom of content. However, I think it is best in its original medium, on the web here or here in its 5-15 minute webisodes instead of the hour-long TV episodes.
