The Christian Right and the Republican Party

Back in June, I wrote about the idea that the church should be the moral compass of America, and it should not abdicate that position to the government.  However, between then and Election Day, I became increasingly alarmed at the incivility and the rumor mongering of the rank and file of the conservative Christian movement.  This is the largely the responsibility of the leaders of this movement even if they weren’t specifically part of the rumors about Barack Obama’s religion and birthplace.  The rank and file were simply trying to do whatever they could to defeat the people they were told would ruin the country.

Since the rise of the Christian Right starting with the Moral Majority in the 1970s through the domination of the Dobson-Robertson crowd of the 2000s, the conservative Christian movement has invested heavily in the Republican party.  That investment has not just been a monetary one.  It has also been an investment of its time and, more importantly, the majority of its votes.  This has had numerous negative effects, with relatively few positives.

This Week In Jesus: American Idol worship edition

The biggest story by far for Jesus watchers this week comes to us from American Idol’s “Idol Gives Back” show, which aired Wednesday evening. Aside from the fact that they stole the church’s long-forgotten idea of taking care of orphans and widows (well, I can’t say they stole it, since the church threw that idea away long ago) by raising millions of dollars for needy children, the real story for TWIJers came in the very last performance, in the waning moments of the show. [At this point, I am NOT going to mention that my Tivo didn’t actually catch the performance since the show ran late and it came on after 9 pm at which time my infallible Tivaliscious friend switched to the show I had set to record at 9…I’m not going to mention it because my relationship with my Tivo is pretty important to me and I would never do anything to hurt it…I heart you, Tivo!]What happened in the last few minutes of the telecast was a simple little performance that was almost unexplainable from a conceptual standpoint.

Pat Robertson on Climate Change

Pat Robertson stands to take a beating from TSS, but when he does something right we have to admit it. This ad is part of the We Can Solve It global warming ad campaign sponsored by former Vice President Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection. Robertson teams with Al Sharpton, a guy who has his own history of outrageous utterances from the other end of the political spectrum.

By doing this ad, Robertson goes against major conservative theological and political pressure and actually lives to tell about it. So, first he endorses Rudy Giuliani for President, disagreeing with almost every other leader of the Christian Right, and now this. Is this a kinder, gentler Pat Robertson? I’m not counting on it, but this is a pretty big step in the right direction.

Obama’s Pastor In Trouble

As you probably already know, Rev. Jeremiah Wright is Barack Obama’s former pastor and supposed spiritual mentor, and he’s said some pretty disturbing things.  He’s offended Sen. Hillary Clinton and, worst of all, blamed the U.S. for 9/11 because of its racist laws.  I can see conservative Christians jumping all over this as proof that Barack Obama and all Democrats are dangerous for America.

Here’s the thing.  Pat Robertson, who agreed with the late Jerry Falwell when he blamed the U.S.’s tolerance of gays, abortionists, the ACLU, and the People For the American Way for 9/11, was equally wrong.  It’s legitimate to be concerned that Obama might have been influenced by Rev. Wright’s spewing of anti-American rhetoric, but it’s also legitimate to wonder what influence President Bush’s pastor or any of the other conservative religious leaders have had on him over the last several years.  There is such a thing as free speech in this country, and when people go over the top like Rev.

Presidential Campaign ‘08 Part 3–Mike Huckabee: Christian Maverick

Huckabee is a socially conservative former Southern Baptist preacher, but he has slightly more liberal views on education, health care, and the environment than Pat Robertson, James Dobson, and the other major organs of the Christian Right. Because of this or not, they have not endorsed him. They have endorsed different candidates based on specific issues, some on which Huckabee has essentially identical views (e.g., National Right to Life–Fred Thompson, Robertson himself–Rudy Giuliani).

I believe this is good for the Christian community. For too long, Christians have stopped thinking for themselves. They vote for so-and-so because Pat Robertson said to. Finally, at least in Iowa, they took a stand and voted for someone they believed reflected their own values. I don’t personally endorse him. I support Fred Thompson for his intelligence and exposure to opposing views in Hollywood.

P.S.
